Schools can be categorised into two types as mixed schools and exclusive schools. Exclusive schools admit only based on gender and are either all-girls or all-boys schools. Mixed schools, on the other hand, admit regardless of gender and are open to anyone to enrol in. The system employed by mixed schools is known as co-education (or co-ed) and is a standard among many cultures in the world, since it rose to prominence is the 19th century. Exclusive schools are also popular and depending on the country, may be more popular than mixed schools. The learning and teaching styles are generally different in co-ed schools than when students are segregated and have advantages and disadvantages which will be further elaborated in this article.


Students are exposed to more diversity in co-ed schools. This can be positive for students as it teaches them that other worldviews exist and are deserving of their attention and respect during their formative years. It also allows for a wider array of ideas to enter discussion as well as the ability to see the world from different perspectives by having both boys and girls engage in collaborative learning activities. This also promotes equality between girls and boys, and they would be exposed to each gender participating in the same activities and promote mutual understanding. These values will benefit a productive member of society as they leave school to be more accepting and open minded.

Social Aspects

Mixed schools promote students’ social wellbeing by allowing them more peers to interact with who may or may not share the same views as them. Their approach to resolving conflicts and managing relationships can develop their social skills in order to make them productive members of the society. Mixed schools also prepare students for the real world where no segregation can be seen. It also eliminates any justification for sexism or discrimination they might encounter later as their formative years were spent treating each other as equals.


In contrast to the above, in some co-ed schools, especially if poorly managed, there can be discrimination or bias for an against certain genders during certain activities. There may also be instances of social conflicts or instigate the formation of stereotyping and bullying in schools based on gender and traditional gender roles. Disparity in performance between groups in either academics or sports may be cause for such discrimination or stereotyping.


Although not a problem in earlier ages, co-education in older students may cause unwarranted distractions that may affect their academic life. Although a typical schoolyard crush is not an issue, an unreturned infatuation or a conflict may escalate to unmanageable scales unless the school keeps a watchful eye or enforces strict discipline. Events of this nature hinder academic performance and stile students’ academic growth. It also provides the opportunity for premature sexual development which may have long term effects on the students’ wellbeing.
